Design of patient rooms reduces infections | KAMIN project

Since 2016, the team has been studying the impact of architecture on the hygiene and recovery of hospital patients in the KARMIN project (Hospital, Architecture, Microbiome and Infection). Based on the research, a model patient room was developed in 2020 that minimizes the risk of infection to patients. In the sanitary area, solutions from HEWI ensure greater hygiene and a reduced risk of infection in hospitals.

Architects from the Technical University of Braunschweig, together with molecular biologists and physicians from the Charité hospital in Berlin, have investigated the influence of the interior design of patient rooms on the risk of infection by hospital germs.

The results show, among other things, that handrails, door handles or sanitary facilities provide fertile ground for a large number of pathogens, even with good cleaning intervals, so that the risk of infection increases as a result. High-quality materials, hygienic processing techniques and innovative functions can effectively support hygiene and significantly reduce the risk of infection.

HEWI side trolley

The side trolley offers flexible storage space. It can be conveniently pushed to where it is needed at the moment. As a design statement, it not only cuts a fine figure in the bathroom, but also creates flexible storage options in the living area. The shelves provide plenty of storage space. The side trolley has fixable wheels for a particularly safe stand. The side trolley is available with powder-coated surfaces in high-gloss white or matt black with elegant chrome elements.

HEWI solutions offer optimum hygiene in the KARMIN patient bathroom

The choice of materials has a decisive influence on the design of hygienic sanitary products at HEWI. In this way, the development team ensures that products have as few joints as possible where dirt and water can collect. This is of particular importance for washbasins or in the shower.

Washbasin with surge edge

Washbasins with surge edge offer barrier-free comfort and hygienic advantages. Like all HEWI washbasins, they have no overflow in which germs could accumulate. They also have a surge edge that prevents water from standing on the silicone joint to the wall.

Folding support handle with flush release

A small number of components makes cleaning easier and increases hygiene. Due to the integration of functions, product surfaces with few joints are created. This makes the surfaces particularly easy to clean. On the folding support handle, for example, the flush release and the function button are flush-mounted.

Hygienic solutions at the WC

The System 900 WC brush set and WC paper holder are made of high-quality materials. Stainless steel has a non-porous and therefore particularly hygienic surface. Minimal maintenance is sufficient to prevent the accumulation of dirt or microorganisms. The material is robust and insensitive to scratches. Stainless steel products are extremely resistant to cleaning agents and disinfectants. The inner container can be removed for optimum cleaning.

Hygiene solutions in the shower

Hygiene is a decisive factor for use in the hospital sector. System 900 angled handles and shower handrails are made from as few components as possible, resulting in only an extremely small number of joints. Due to particularly precise manufacturing, components are joined together to create the smoothest, most hygienic surface possible.

Hygienic sealing element

The shower seats are characterized by a hygienic surface that is easy to clean. Due to wall unevenness, the mounting rosette is often not completely flush with the wall. With the help of sealing elements, a quick and reliable seal can be achieved. The wall brackets of the shower seats, the folding support handles and the fixing rosettes of the System 900 grab rails can be equipped with it. The design of the products ensures that water does not collect on the surface but runs off.

HEWI | Professional Care

Making life easier for people - with individually adaptable concepts that enable independence and provide security - is what drives us. Universal design incorporates the needs of all people. We have been living this ideal for more than 35 years as a sustainable and holistic design philosophy.

The modular principle enables individual planning - so elective service areas or comfort wards can be implemented just as easily as areas for regular patients. A thoughtfully designed bathroom contributes to the well-being of patients and at the same time relieves the nursing staff. HEWI offers complete solutions, innovative installation concepts and support in planning and equipping barrier-free bathrooms, access points and doors in healthcare buildings.
